History and Development of the Placement of Periodicals in the National Library of Serbia

Abstract

The paper describes the history of exchange and placement of Serbian periodicals from the National Library of Serbia to foreign libraries in the period from the Second World War to the present day. Methods of procurement, topics, and the cultural significance of periodicals placed abroad are also presented. The development processes and the institutionalization of sending periodicals within the Acquisitions Department of the National Library of Serbia, primarily by establishing the Periodicals Exchange Section, are described. Moreover, the paper describes the cooperation between the National Library of Serbia and other libraries in the country related to the exchange and gift of periodicals. Ways of recording, technological improvements of the work, as well as the examples of everyday practice, are outlined. Further, the paper shows specific data about the results achieved in the placement. Finally, several opinions and ideas on further improvement of the exchange and gift of periodicals in the system of both Serbian and foreign libraries are presented.
