This paper follows the development of the Children's Department, established as a separate unit with a reading room for children only in 2012, when the Library moved to new library space. The establishment of the Children's Department at the Public Library “Đura Jakšić” brought new priorities, primarily activities to promote books and reading in children and continuous implementation of innovations in the work with the youngest readers. The paper presents the results of a survey of the attitudes of elementary school students in Petrovac na Mlavi towards the library in general. Some specific activities that the Library undertakes to promote books and reading in the youngest readers are also presented. The goal of every library activity should be permanent education of the population, nurturing national specifics, as well as the assistance in the integration into the global information flows. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to start the affirmation of books and reading in a timely manner, with the youngest users. Therefore, the importance of the activities of the Children's Department is emphasized, because: “A child who reads will be an adult who thinks”.
